## Deployment Options

Infrasense can be deployed in 2 modes

- Passive
- Active

##### Passive Infrasense

Customers preferring to monitor their IT infrastructure passively without requiring to install any software agents on their critical IT infrastructure can choose to deploy the Infrasense software as a passive sensor. Default deployment of Infrasense software is passive mode. Infrasense provides various remote monitoring technology options like SSH, SNMP, WMI etc depending on your deployment needs. In this method Infrasense communicates to various devices in your IT network using pre-configured method and authentication credentials and continuously polls infrastructure performance key performance indicators(KPIs). Non root/admin credentials are used in polling infrastructure statistics from various devices and all credentials configured in ThoughtData's Enterprise360 software are encrypted and stored and no credentials are sent in clear text in any communications providing a highly secure remote monitoring environment. 

For Infrasense to perform its functions in this mode it has to be deployed on a dedicated machine in your IT network. The machine can be physical/virtual. Infrasense software is supported on various Linux platforms, however, deployment on a Ubuntu 20.04 server OS is the most preferred, common and well tested option.

 

##### Active Infrasense

Customers who are unable to provision credentials to monitor their IT infrastructure can optionally run Infrasense software on each of their devices as an agent software. This method is recommended in situations where credentials to access application servers for collecting statistical data are

- not available or
- not provided due to security concerns or
- passive monitoring is not viable due to continuous changing identities of application servers (E.g. : Microservices in cloud)

In such a deployment Infrasense software directly runs on the devices and application servers and consumes a very small/negligible portion of resources(CPU and memory) to perform its core functions.

Infrasense in this mode is supported on various Linux and Windows platforms to suit your deployment requirements.

**Note:** Active Infrasense sensors capture continuous performance data and send it to a dedicated passive Infrasense sensor in your IT network, which is then sent to Enterprise360 for all analytics, thus passive Infrasense is also required if you choose to deploy active Infrasense agents. One Passive Infrasense can collect monitoring data from multiple active Infrasense agents.
